57 before venturing into the far north of the state. You can drive from Hawker to Blinman on a sealed road. Although the road to Arkaroola is unsealed, access with a 2WD vehicle with reasonable clearance and conditions is easily achievable. Please note that rest stops on the Stuart Highway are for temporary stops only. No overnight stays are permitted. For further information, call Transport SA on 1300 361 033. Even though it’s remote, dumped sewage in the Outback is an environmental disaster for the people and animals living here. Please use one of the many sewerage dump points (listed further on this page). As a courtesy to other visitors, please keep dump areas clean and remember to follow the RV’s Code of Conduct when travelling. Public Access Routes Public Access Routes (PARs) are unsealed roads that are open to the public but located on private properties. PARs are often used by livestock and, in addition, you may share the road with farm machinery, semi-trailers and road trains. Take care of native animals on these roads during the day and avoid travelling at dawn, dusk or at night. When travelling on PARs in remote areas, take into account communication needs, food and water, and ensure your vehicle is well-equipped and suitable for rough terrain. Always notify a friend or relative of your plans and keep in touch throughout your journey about your travel plans. Also be aware that the condition of unsealed roads can change dramatically with rain, flooding, wind and high traffic periods, so keep an eye on the weather. A good information source is www.bom.gov.au. For information on PARs in South Australia, call 1800 678 447 or download the 4WD Tracks and Repeater Towers brochure at www.http://southaustralia.com/de-de/places- to-go/flinders-ranges-and-outback/brochures- and-maps Touring the region Take the work out of your holiday and book an organised tour. This way you can get more time to relax and discover ancient wonders and hidden secrets. Taking a guided tour means you’ll be informed by those who live and work here, getting your questions answered and letting someone else do the driving and map reading. Tours depart from Adelaide or from several locations within the region. See more of the region’s hidden wonders, get closer to nature and discover the secrets of the past in hidden fossil beds and ancient Aboriginal creation stories. Or, take a once in a lifetime tour of spectacular Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre. If you’re feeling adventurous you might be interested in going off-road on a 4WD tour, exploring the Outback stations, nature, geological and tag-along tours, or even an extended Outback and coastal adventure where you can experience sleeping in an Aussie swag. Some small group tours link up the tri-states coming in from Alice Springs, Broken Hill in New South Wales or Outback Queensland. However you choose to get here, a tour will take you to places others can only dream about. Have a night to spare? Explore the natural beauty of iconic Wilpena Pound in the heart of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, with half and full-day tours through gorges and rock formations. The Wilpena Pound region is home to Ediacaran fossils, the world’s best evidence of the first multi-cellular life forms on earth.
