23 as well as legends and stories at Nukunu people’s Interpretive Centre, the traditional owners of this area. To see the stunning Cathedral Rock formation, head to the edge of Mount Remarkable Creek, west of the town. Taste local Southern Flinders Ranges wines at the North Star and Mount Remarkable hotels or grab a bite to eat at the new local cafes. At Mount Remarkable National Park, walking trails range from one to five hours and include parts of the Heysen Trail that pass through Melrose to the summit of Mount Remarkable (960 metres). One of the complete sections of the Southern Flinders Rail Trail, the 22 kilometre Melrose to Wilmington Rail Trail, is great for families and tours, with gentle undulating and scenic landscapes. ORROROO 57 kilometres from Jamestown map reference D3, page 19 Orroroo is the ideal place from which to explore the majestic beauty of both the Southern and Central Flinders Ranges. On the road to Port Augusta between Orroroo and Wilmington is Goyder’s Line – the line where pastoral and farming lands meet. Goyder’s Line was mapped out in 1865 by the Surveyor-General of South Australia George Woodroffe Goyder – and the line became an important factor in the state’s settlement as it was a good indication of the limits of reliable cropping land. Drive up to Tank Hill Lookout for spectacular views across the township and scenic Pekina Creek, home to the Giant Gum Tree and the historic rail bridge. Located near the local swimming pool and golf course, Lion’s Park is the perfect place to stop for a picnic lunch, with barbecues provided for public use, as well as public toilets. Walk or cycle Orroroo’s established trails, taking in breathtaking scenery along Pekina Creek with highlights including Aboriginal carvings, the reservoir and a poem carved into rock in the late 19th century. You can hire bikes from the nearby caravan park. The Giant Gum Tree rates a mention as one of South Australia’s significant historic trees, estimated at being around 500 years old, with a circumference of up to 10 metres before it forks in the trunk. Kids will love Magnetic Hill – a phenomenon that needs to be experienced to be believed. Leave your car in neutral at the bottom of the hill and watch as it rolls back up to the top. Other attractions close by include iconic ghost towns, challenging cycling tracks, geocaching locations and award-winning 4WD tracks. Step back in time as you wander along Orroroo’s picturesque main street lined with shop facades dating back to the 1870s. For an adventure, embark on the historical building walk, ‘Find the Magpie’, which is a great way to explore this friendly scenic town. Orroroo Kangaroo is an award-winning kangaroo meat and smallgoods store and is a must for foodies who wish to sample some local produce and see a range of kangaroo products on display. Exhilarating four-wheel driving, action-packed mountain biking, breathtaking views and pristine campsites, cottages and shearers’ quarters await visitors to the Bendleby Ranges. The Orroroo Market is held on the fourth Sunday during the months of March, May, July, September and November from 9am–12:30pm at the Blacksmiths Chatter. This quaint country market has ‘themed’ market days and offers lots of family fun.
